N114 - Age related info: hospitalization, separation, injury/pain

How will an infant/toddler react to hospitalization? Reaction to hospitalization– separation anxiety; protest, despair, detachment Injury & Pain – respond with a generalized reaction to pain
How will an older toddler, 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 react to hospitalization? Prep for surgery – allow choices, but not ones with a yes or no response. Give them permission to cry. Reaction to hospitalization – temper tantrums, loss of control results from altered routine & rituals, object to physical restraint
How will an older toddler handle separation and injury/pain? Separation – peaks between 15 & 30 months Injury & Pain – poor concept of body boundaries, may react to painless procedure intensely, memory influences response, need some preparation
How will a preschooler, 3 1/2 to 5 react to hospitalization? Prep for surgery – use therapeutic play. Have vivid imagination or magical thinking, do least invasive procedure last – fear castration and body mutilation Reaction to hospitalization - stress from altered routine, pain may be seen as punishment
How will a preschooler react to separation and pain/injury? Separation – can tolerate brief separation, protests are subtle, refusing to eat, difficult sleep. Injury & Pain – Some control in relation to pain
How will a school age child react to hospitalization? Prep for surgery – Provide opportunities for the child to participate. Use simple drawings, teaching dolls to help them understand. Reaction to hospitalization – lack of productivity, fear of death, depression, will use stalling behaviors
How will a school age child (6-11) react to pain/injury? Injury & Pain – more concerned with disability than pain, able to communicate about pain
How will an adolescent react to hospitalization? Preparation for surgery – peer group is extremely important. Provide privacy whenever possible. Reaction to hospitalization – withdrawn & uncooperative, body image important
How will a adolescent react to pain/injury? Injury & Pain – react to pain with self control; do fear death, very anxious over physical changes, may appear overconfident.
