Forces

TermDefinition
Force A push or a pull
Contact Forces A force that acts by direct contact.
Interaction Table A table showing the components of a system and which components interact with each other.
Force Model A model showing all the components of a system and the forces that are acting on each component.
Unbalanced Forces When two forces acting on an object are not equal in size, we say that they are unbalanced forces. Unbalanced forces can cause an object that is not moving starts to move or an object that is moving changes speed or direction.
Balanced Forces When two individual forces are of equal size and opposite in direction. Balanced forces on an object can cause the object to stay still or continue to move at the same speed and in the same direction.
Free Body Diagram A model showing only the forces that act on an object.
Mass A measure of how much matter is in an object
Phenomenon A term used in science for anything interesting for which data can be collected.
Forces that Act at a Distance A force that act at a distance such as: gravity, magnetism and electrical. There is no direct contact.
Inertia The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion
Momentum The product of an object's mass and velocity
