Element 1- Anatomy: Terminology and Tissues of the body

Define FLEXION Bending movement around the joint of a limb (elbow, knee etc.) that decreases the size of the angle between the bones of the limb at the joint
Define EXTENSION An unbending movement around the joint of a limb (elbow, knee etc.) that increases the angle between the bones of the limb at the joint
Define ABDUCTION To draw away (as a limb) from a position near or parallel to the median axis of the body
Define ADDUCTION To come towards (as a limb) to the limb's natural position near or parallel to the median axis of the body
Define CIRCUMDUCTION The movement of a limb or extremity so that the distal end travels in a circle and the proximal end remains fixed
Define INTERNAL ROTATION Rotation of an extremity towards the median line of the body
Define EXTERNAL ROTATION Rotation of an extremity away from the median line of the body
Define AXIAL ROTATION Rotating around the spine
Define PRONATION Rotation of the hand and forearm so the palm faces backwards or downwards
Define SUPINATION Rotation of the hand and forearm so the palm faces forwards or upwards
Define PLANTARFLEXION Movement of the foot that extends the foot and toes downwards towards the sole
Define DORSIFLEXION Movement of the foot that flexes the foot and toes upwards away from the sole.
Define INVERSION The foot is rotated inwards so sole is towards midline
Define EVERSION Foot is rotated outwards lso sole is away from midline
Define DEPRESSION A displacement downwards or inwards (e.g. shoulders)
Define ELEVATION A displacement upwards or outwards (e.g. shoulders)
Define PROTRACTION The act of moving an anatomical part forward anteriorly
Define RETRACTION The act of moving an anatomical part behind the body posteriorly
