TermDefinition
Central Powers Consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria – hence also known as the Quadruple Alliance
Allied Forces The victorious allied nations of World War I and World War II. In World War I, the Allies included Britain, France, Italy, Russia, and the United States.
trenches Dig a trench or trenches in (the ground)
submarine A warship with a streamlined hull designed to operate completely submerged in the sea for long periods, equipped with an internal store of air and a periscope and typically armed with torpedoes and/or missiles.
propaganda Information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was a peace treaty signed on 3 March 1918 between the new Bolshevik government of Soviet Russia and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and Ottoman Empire), that ended Russia's participation in World War I.
Nationalism The strong belief that the interests of a particular nation-state are of primary importance.
Militarism The belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend or promote national interests.
Imperialism A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force
Alliance A union or association formed for mutual benefit, especially between countries or organizations
Fourteen Points Fourteen Points is a blueprint for world peace that was to be used for peace negotiations after World War I, elucidated in a January 8, 1918
Zimmerman Note The Zimmermann Note was an internal diplomatic communication issued from the German Foreign Office in January, 1917 that proposed a military alliance between Germany and Mexico in the event of the United States' entering World War I against Germany
The Sussex Pledge The Sussex Pledge was a promise made in 1916 during World War I by Germany to the United States prior to the latter's entry into the war.
U-boat A German submarine used in World War I or World War II.
Treaty of Versailles The Treaty of Versailles was one of the peace treaties at the end of World War I.
