QuestionAnswer
Weathering Process that breaks down rock and other substances of Earths surface.
Erosion Process of removal of rock particles by natural forces such as wind, water, ice, or gravity.
Mechanical weathering Rock is physically broken into smaller pieces by processes such as freezing and thawing, release of pressure, plant growth, animal actions, and abrasion (grinding away rock by water, wind, ice, or gravity.
Chemical weathering Process that breaks down rocks through chemical changes such as those that include water, oxygen, CO2, living organisms, and acid rain.
Water It is the most important cause of chemical weathering- it dissolves rocks over time.
Oxygen When in the presence of water will combine with iron in a process called oxidation which produces rust.
Carbon dioxide Carbon dioxide dissolved in rain water forms carbonic acid which can easily weather rocks such as marble and lime stone.
Living organisms Plants have roots that naturally produce weak acids when they grow which slowly dissolves rocks around the roots.
Acid rain It is the result of burning fossil fuel which reacts which water vapor and clouds, forming an acid, it causes rapid weathering.
Climate Refers to the average weather conditions in an area both type of weathering occur faster in wet climates.
