Ch. 3

TermDefinition
Consistent A system that has at least one solution.
Solution of a system in two variables it is in the form of (x,y), in three variables it looks like (x,y,z). various variables may be used to represent the ordered pair or ordered triple. When graphed it is the intersection of the lines at one point.
Scalar Multiplication When a number in front of the matrix is multiplied by every element inside the matrix to get a product with the same dimensions as the original matrix.
interval notation Solution written in the form of (2,infinity symbol) or (-infinity symbol, 6] as examples.
Row Numbers aligned horizontally in a matrix
Elimination method or addition method Equations are added to eliminate a variable.
Substitution method The process is to take one equation and solve for one variable. The expression for that variable is then replaced for the variable in another equation.
Linear inequality Similar to a linear equation except the equality symbol is replaces with <, >, etc.
X-intercept method for solving an equation. Write so that one side of the equation equals 0. Graph y1=the nonzero side of the equation. Find the x-intercept or zero of the graph. The x-coordinate of the x-intercept is the solution.
Intersection of graphs method for solving an equation Graph y1= left side of the equation, y2= right side of the equation. The x-component of the intersection is the solution.
When two or more matrices with the same dimensions are added by adding the elements in the same position together.
Represented by a graph and shading of all points that satisfy all linear inequalities. Commonly shaded area on the graph
Column
System of equations
A rectangular array of numbers
When cost of production equals the income from selling a product.
Dependent A system that has infinitely many solutions. When graphed it is the same line.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
