Computer vocab

QuestionAnswer
Central Processing Unit (CPU) the part of a computer that controls its overall activity, as by executing instructions and performing logical operations
File a collection of data stored and dealt with as a single, named unit
Hard Disk a computer drive for hard disks, often, specif., such a drive as distinguished from a floppy
Hardware electronic or mechanical equipment that uses cassettes, disks, etc.
Input data or programs entered or to be entered into a computer for processing
Memory a device in a computer designed to accept, store, and recall information or instructions
Monitor a receiver or speaker, as in the control room of a broadcasting studio, for checking the quality of the transmission
Mouse a small, hand-held device that is moved about on a flat surface in front of a video screen in such a way as to move or position the cursor or part of the display
Network a larger system encompassing interconnected computer systems, as from various businesses, universities, etc.
Operating System (OS) the software that controls the basic operation of a computer or computer network
Output information, resulting from computer processing, that is delivered to a user, as printout or video display, or transferred to disk or tape
Printer a device, controlled by a computer, that prints that computer's output on paper
Program a series of operations
Server the central computer in a network to which other computers or terminals are connected: shared programs, files, and databases are stored on the server
Software the programs, routines, etc. for a computer or computer system
Web Browser software designed to enable a user to access and display data that is on the World Wide Web
