Chem Chapter 6 Vocab Terms

TermDefinition
Radiant Energy solar energy, comes from the sun
Thermal Energy the energy associated with the random motion of atoms and molecules
Chemical Energy stored within the structural units of chemical substances
Potential Energy energy available by virtue of an objects position
Thermochemistry is the study of heat change in chemical reactions
Heat transfer of thermal energy between two bodies that are at different temperatures
System specific part of the universe that is of interest to us
Surroundings are the rest of the universe outside the system
Endothermic heat has to be supplied to the system
Exothermic any process that gives off heat, transfers thermal energy to its surroundings
Enthalpy H=U + PV (internal energy + pressure(volume))
Specific Heat amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of the substance by one degree Celcius
Heat Capacity the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of a given quantity of the substance by one degree Celsius
