Bureaucracy Large, complex, administrative structure that handles everyday business of an organization
Bureaucrat Each person who works for an organization and has defined duties and responsibilities
Administration Officials in the executive branch of government
Department Name given to agencies of Cabinet rank
Agency Refers to any government body
Commission Agencies who regulate business activities
Corporation / authority Agencies that conduct business-like activities
Bureau Name given to major elements in a department
Staff agencies Aid executive administrators by offering advice and assistance in organization management
Line agencies Performs the tasks for which the organization exists
Executive Office of the President (EOP) A complex organization consisting of several separate agencies that are staffed but the Presidents advisers and assistants
Federal budget A detailed financial document containing estimates of federal income and spending during the coming fiscal year
Fiscal year The 12 month period used by businesses and the government for financial management purposes, such as record keeping and budgeting
Domestic affairs All of the matters that are not directly connected to the area of foreign affairs
Executive departments Also called the Cabinet, made up of 15 different departments that are units of the federal administration
Civilian Nonmilitary workforce
Secretary The leader or head of each department
Attorney General The leader or head of the Department of Justice
Independent agency Agencies that are located outside of the department
Independent executive agencies Include most of the non-Cabinet agencies
Civil service Civilian Employees who do the administrative work of the government
Patronage Practice of giving jobs, contracts and other government favors to political supporters and friends
Spoils System Another name for patronage
Draft Compulsory military service
Independent regulatory commission An agency that is beyond the reach of presidential direction and control
Government Corporations Corporations within the executive branch and are sugject to presidential direction and control
