Fraction Vocabulary

Topic 5, 6, 7, 8, & 9

TermDefinition
Divisible Capable of being divided by another number without a remainder.
Multiple A product of that number and a whole number greater than 0.
Prime Number This number has exactly two factors, 1 and itself.
Composite Number Has more than two factors.
Prime Factorization Writing a number as the product of it's prime factors.
Greatest Common Factor The largest number that is a factor of two or more numbers.
Numerator The number of equal parts or objects being considered (top number in a fraction)
Denominator The total number of equal parts or objects (bottom number in a fraction)
Fraction Numbers that describe the division of a whole into equal parts
Proper Fraction Fraction that is less than 1. Its numerator is less than it's denominator.
Improper Fraction Fraction that is greater than or equal to 1. It's numerator is greater than or equal to it's denominator.
Mixed Number Combines a whole number and a fraction.
Like Denominators When the fractions have the same denominators.
Common Multiple Multiples that are in common between two numbers.
Least Common Multiple The common multiple with the least value.
Unlike Denominators Fractions that have different denominators.
Least Common Denominator The least common multiple of the denominators.
Reciprocal Two numbers whose product is 1 are called this of each other. When you flip a fraction.
