What is Polytheism? The worship of gods.
What kind of powers did Sumerian believe their gods possessed? Gods of harvest, disastrous floods, illness, good health, and wealth.
Why did priests gain high status in Sumer? People relied on them to help gain the gods favor.
What was Sumer's social hierarchy? The division of society by rank or class.
What were men and women's roles? Men held political power and made laws. Women took care of home and children.
What is the difference between urban and rural? The countryside and the city.
What were city-states? A city and the countryside around it. The amount of countryside controlled depended on military strength.
How did the city-states get along with each other? Badly because the city-states fought over water.
How was Sargon able to build the first empire? He began a war that defeated the city-states of Sumer and conquered them.
What is an empire? A land with different territories and peoples under a single rule.
