TermDefinition
puberty The period of time when boys and girls grow into men and women. This usually becomes noticaable between the ages of 12 - 16.
adolescence Another word for the period of time when boys and girls grow into men and women. Usually the teen years.
hormones The chemicals produced by the body that help shape a persons sex (male or female).
testosterone The main hormone that transforms a boy into a man.
oestrogen The main hormone that transforms a girl into a woman.
menstruation The time when a female bleeds from her vagina. This begins at puberty and ends when a women is older. Girls and women generally menstruate every 28 days.
erections When a male's penis becomes hard and ready for sexual activity or intercourse (sex).
sex Being intimate with someone in a sexual way. Be sure to be safe and have permission before doing this. This word also means whether a person is male or female (someone's sex).
sexuality Who a person is attracted to, what a person does sexually and how a person sees themselves and present to others.
consent Permission given by the other person to have sex. 'Age of Consent' refers to the legal age people are allowed to start having sex (16 and 17 in Australia).
sexual diversity All the different types of sexualities people can have, e.g. heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, transsexual, asexual, etc.
gender Traditionally known as 'male' and 'female'. Now a more complicated term meaning ' what someone identifies as' including male, female, nuetral, none, etc.'.
heterosexual People attracted to the opposite sex (males attracted to females and vise versa).
homosexual People who are same sex attracted (men attracted to men, women attracted to women).
straight Another way of saying 'heterosexual'. People attracted to the opposite sex.
gay Males who are only sexually attracted to males. This term can also apply to lesbians.
lesbian Females who are only sexually attracted to females. This term only refers to females.
bisexual A person attracted to both males and females.
transsexual Someone born one sex but identifies as the opposite another - e.g. someone born a male but indentifies as a female and vise versa.
transgender A person who identifies as a gender different to the one they are born with - e.g. someone born female identifies as being male, etc.
questioning Someone who is still working out their sexuality. They are not sure and are experimenting with different sexualities.
fluid Someone who moves between sexual identities throughout their life.
intersexual A person born with both male and female genitals.
asexual Someone who has no sexual attraction to anyone.
Sexually Transmitted Infections STIs are infections caused by germs which may spread from person to person during vaginal, anal and oral sex. Popular STI's include Chlamydia, Genital Herpes, Genital Warts, Gonorrhea and Syphilis.
Blood Borne Viruses BBVs are spread through contaminated blood and bodily fluids. The most common examples are HIV, AIDS, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.
symptoms Physical or mental signs of illness.
sexual responsibility If anyone contracts an STI or BBV it is their responsibility to see a doctor right away and get it treated. They must also tell everyone they had sex with recently so they too can get treatment.
contraception What people use to aid birth control (avoid getting pregnant) and to minimise the risk of contracting an STI or BBV. No form of contraception is 100%.
condoms A latex sheath that a male wears on his penis to stop the exchange of bodily fluids and protect against STIs and BBVs.
The Pill Pills made up of hormones females can take orally to help prevent the chances of getting pregnant. It does not prevent the chances of contracting an STIs and BBVs.
abstinence When someone decides not to have sex until they are sure they have met the person they want to be with for a very long time and possibly have a family with.
