Temperature an object as that which determines the sensation of warmth or coldness felt from contact with it, when its is cool or chilly out temperature slows the movement of living things, temperature comes from
Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) A measure of the amount of oxygen consumed by natural, biological processes that break down organic matter
Phosphorus (phosphate) Nonmetalic Chemical element. Found in every living cell. Plants absorb it and use it in Photosynthesis. 4/5ths occurs in bones. Two forms, Red and White Phosphorus. Black Phosphorus resembles grpahite. German Alchemist discovered phosphorus in 1669.
Nitrogen Nitrogen is a nonmetallic chemical element. Daniel Rutherford, a scottish physician, discovered Nitrogen in 1772. All organisms must have nitrogen to live.
Tannin Tannins are phenolic compounds that precipitate proteins, They are composed of a very diverse group of oligomers and polymers. There is some confusion about the terminology used to identify or classify a substance as a tannin, ,
Dissolved Oxygen
Ammonia Natural gas (methane, CH4) is reacted with steam to produce carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas (H2) in a two step process. Hydrogen gas and nitrogen gas are then reacted in the Haber Process to produce ammonia. Widely used as a fertilizerm (Good Crops)
Nitrite A compound of the Nitrite anion (NO2-) and some other element. Under certain conditions sodium Nitrite may combine with other chemicals to form nitrosamines, which can cause cancer
Nitrate Any kind of compound that contains inorganic nitrate ion (NO3-). Plants use Nitrare to make protiens. Also important in explosives, fireworks, heart medicine, & photographic films. People take Nitrates daily, primaryily from vegetables.
pH A number used by scientists to indicate the concetration of hydrogen ions in a solution. pH stands for potential Hydrogen. The Danish biochemist Soren Sorensen invented the pH system in 1909. A scale to tell how acidic or how basic something is.
