Question | Answer |
---|---|
Solar energy | alternative energy from the Sun |
Wind energy | uses turbine to generate energy; created by uneven heating from the Sun |
Biomass | alternative energy from plants and living things |
Hydroelectric energy | energy generated by moving water at dams |
Geothermal energy | Energy created using heat with the Earth |
Nonrenewable | Resources that can not be replaced once used (oil, coal, natural gas) |
Renewable | resources that can be quickly replaced once used (water, sunlight, wind) |
Fossil Fuels | another term for nonrenewable resources (coil, oil, and nature gas) |
Conservation | using less resources by saving and recycling; protecting the resources we have |
Carbon dioxide | gas created by burning fossil fuels |
Igneous | rocks created by cooling magma (granite is an example) |
Metamorphic | Rocks created by heat and pressure (marble is an example) |
Sedimentary | rocks created by compacting and cementing (example: sandstone) |
Rock Cycle | the processes that change rocks over time |
Heat and pressure | processes in the earth that create metamorphic rocks |
Melting and cooling | the processes that change rocks to igneous rocks |
Talc | the softest mineral (used in powders) |
Intrusive Igneous | Rocks that cool and solidify from magma inside the Earth |
Extrusive igneous | Rocks that cool and solidify from lava on the Earth's surface |
Fossils | the trace or remains of an organism that lived long ago, most commonly preserved in sedimentary rock |
Superposition | law that states younger rocks lie above older rocks |
Recycling | Conservation method that saves resources by reusing them |
Mineral | naturally occuring inorganic solids |
Sun | the original source of energy for ALL of Earth's resources |
Uniformitarianism | Principle that shows the Earth is very old (processes that change the Earth are the same) |
Catastrophism | Principle that states Earth's changes happen suddenly |
