Seismic waves | a wave of energy that is generated by an earthquake or other earth vibration and that travels within the earth or along its surface. |
Pressure | the exertion of force upon a surface by an object, fluid, etc., in contact with it: |
Crust | the outer layer of the earth, about 22 miles (35 km) deep under the continents (continental crust) and 6 miles (10 km) deep under the oceans |
Basalt | the dark, dense igneous rock of a lava flow or minor intrusion, composed essentially of labradorite and pyroxene and often displaying a columnar structure. |
Granite | a coarse-grained igneous rock composed chiefly of orthoclase and albite feldspars and of quartz, usually with lesser amounts of one or more other minerals, as mica, hornblende, or augite. |
Mantle | the portion of the earth, about 1800 miles (2900 km) thick, between the crust and the core. |
Lithosphere | the crust and upper mantle of the earth. the solid portion of the earth (distinguished from atmosphere, hydrosphere ). |
asthenosphere | the region below the lithosphere, variously estimated as being from fifty to several hundred miles (eighty-five to several hundred kilometers) thick, |
Outer Core | The Outer Core is the second to last layer of the Earth. It is a magma like liquid layer that surrounds the Inner Core and creates Earth's magnetic field. |
Inner Core | in geology, the innermost part of a core, specif. a solid sphere in the middle of the fluid core such as the iron-nickel core of the Earth |
