Lesson 3 Weather and Climate
Term | Definition |
---|---|
weather | the day-to-day change in conditions in the atmosphere at a particular place on Earth |
atmosphere | the gaseous envelope surrounding the earth; the air |
climate | the average weather conditions of a large region over a long period of time |
prevailing winds | winds that blow predominantly from a single general direction over a particular point on the Earth's surface (caused by uneven heating of the Earth) |
ocean current | is a continuous, directed movement of seawater generated by forces acting upon this mean flow, such as breaking waves, wind, the Coriolis effect, cabbeling, and temperature and salinity differences (caused by uneven heating of the Earth) |
air masses | large bodies of of air with similar temperature, humidity, and pressure (daily weather patterns are caused by their movements) |
front | the boundary between two air masses (clouds and precipitation are characteristic of fronts) |
cold front | occurs where a cold air mass overtakes and displaces a warm air mass (clouds and precipitation are characteristic of fronts) |
warm front | occurs where a warm air mass rises over a cold air mass (clouds and precipitation are characteristic of fronts) |
occluded front | occurs when a cold front catches up with a warm front and the two weather systems merge (clouds and precipitation are characteristic of fronts) |
precipitation | falling products of condensation in the atmosphere, as rain, snow, or hail |
meteorologists | people who study the short-term weather patterns and data of particular areas. |
