Lesson 2 Earth's Resources

resource anything that is needed by humans to survive
soil layer of loose disintegrated rock, organic matter, living organisms, air, and water in which rooted plants, including agricultural plants grow
minerals naturally forming inorganic substances with a crystalline structure of which rocks are made
energy resources these include fossil fuels, flowing water, wind, solar energy, and geothermal energy
solar energy energy derived from the sun in the form of solar radiation
natural resources These include air, water, soil, minerals, and energy
renewable resources resources having an endless supply (wind power, water power, plant or tree products because they grow relatively quickly)
nonrenewable resources resources having a limited supply (coal, natural gas, soil, minerals, oil, etc)
geothermal energy a form of energy obtained from within the earth, originating in its core; also, energy produced by extracting the earth's internal heat
ozone layer the layer of the upper atmosphere where most atmospheric ozone is concentrated, from about 8 to 30 miles (12 to 48 km) above the earth, with the maximum ozone concentration occurring at an altitude of about 12 miles (19 km)
conservation any action taken to limit the consumption, overuse, and pollution of the natural environment
