Psych Unit 2
Psychology, Unit 2: Nervous System and Brain
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Nervous System | Brain, nerve cells, spinal cord; involved in everything we do. |
Central Nervous System | Brain and spinal cord |
Peripheral Nervous System | The sensory and motor neurons that connect the central nervous system to the rest of the body |
Neuron | Nerve cell |
Dendrite | Branchlike parts of a neuron that are specialized to receive information. |
Axon | Long fiber that carries impulses away from the cell body of a neuron |
Myelin Sheath | A layer of fatty, electrical insulation that surrounds the axon. |
Axon Terminal | The endpoint of a neuron where neurotransmitters are stored |
Synapse | Gap between neurons |
Neurotransmitter | Chemical messengers that cross the synaptic gaps between neurons. |
Sensory Nerves | The nerves that carry sensations of touch, taste, heat, cold, pain, and other modalities from the body to the central nervous system. |
Motor Nerves | Nerves that carry information from the central nervous system to the muscles of the body. |
Somatic System | Part of the nervous system that controls voluntary muscles. |
Autonomic System | This controls involuntary muscles; includes sympathetic and parasympathetic systems |
Sympathetic System | Autonomic system that is activated during stress; 'fight or flight' response |
Parasympathetic System | Part of the autonomic system; operates under normal, peaceful conditions; helps restore & slow down activity, thus keeping the balance in the body |
Frontal Lobe | A lobe of the cerebral cortex that has specialized areas for movement, abstract thinking, planning, memory, and judgment |
Parietal Lobe | Lobe of the brain that processes tactile information, contains the somatosensory cortex. |
Temporal Lobe | A lobe on each hemisphere of the cerebral cortex near the temples that is the primary receiving area for auditory information |
Occipital Lobe | A lobe of the cerebral cortex that processes visual information |
Left Hemisphere | This side of the brain controls logic, problem solving, computation, recall |
Right Hemisphere | This side of the brain controls imagination, art, feelings, spatial relations |
