Cruises
Term | Definition |

bilgewater | The water that accumulates between the floor of the ship and the ship’s hull. |
cabin | A room where you sleep on a ship. |
cruise ship | The largest type of passenger ship; provides transportation, lodging, food and beverage, and entertainment for several days or weeks. |
dock | The action of pulling into a harbor, slowing the boat, and tying up to allow passengers to disembark; can also be the location where this takes place. |
ferry | A boat used to transport passengers, cars, and products short distances. Often used by people in coastal areas to commute to work or school. |
harbor | A body of water that is shallow and protected and offers boats a place to dock. |
lifeboat | A small raft that is carried on a larger vessel; used only in case of an emergency. |
life vest | A flotation device; typically worn as a vest, it attaches around the waist and is designed to keep the person’s head above water. |
oars | Paddles or large pieces of wood with handles and a blade at the other end; used by passengers to propel the boat forward and to steer. |
ocean liner | A large passenger ship designed for traveling thousands of miles. |
port of call | A place where passengers disembark to explore before resuming their cruise. |
sailboat | A type of watercraft that has sails and is propelled by the wind. |
sea | A large body of water, usually salt water, marked by boundaries of land. |
steamboat | A ship that uses steam as its energy source; it uses the energy to rotate large paddles that propel the ship through the water. |
