Tectonic Plates
Unit 1 Part 2
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Continental Drift | The hypothesis that Earth's continents move on Earth's surface |
Convection Currents | The transference of heat in fluid due to density changes, this takes place in the mantle |
Convergent Boundary | A place where tectonic plates push or collide together |
Divergent Boundary | A place where tectonic plates move apart or divide |
Transform Boundary | A place where tectonic plates slide past one another |
Pangaea | An ancient super continent where all of the continents where once joined together |
Plate Boundaries | A place where two or more plates meet |
Tectonic Plate | Large and small rock slabs that make up the lithosphere (also known as lithospheric plates) One of the large, moving pieces into which Earth's lithosphere is broken and which commonly carries both oceanic and continental crust. |
Theory of Plate Tectonics | The theory that Earth's lithosphere is made of huge plates that move over Earth's surface |
Rift Valley | A gap where two plates diverge |
Subduction | A place where one tectonic plate sinks beneath another plate |
