Language Arts Vocab

**8th grade 2015 Make a set of "flashcards" for this Language Arts vocabulary.

TermDefinition
Plot action.
Plot line a graphic organizer that illustrates the pattern of action in a short story.
Setting time and place the story occurs.
Character people or animals who participate in the plot.
Conflict a problem the main character struggles to resolve.
Main character the character who struggles to resolve a conflict.
Major character character other than the main character who plays a large role in the plot.
Minor character character other than the main character that plays a small role in the plot.
Dynamic character a character is changed, for good or bad, by the events in the plot.
Static character a character who is unchanged by the events in the plot.
Climax the turning point in the main character's struggle to resolve a conflict.
Resolution the point of the plot in which the conflict has been resolved.
Denouement a snazzy French word for the resolution of a plot.
Exposition another word for the introduction of a plot.
Cliffhanger a story that ends before the conflict has been fully resolved.
Realistic fiction fiction that is written to seem as if it is real.
Credible believable.
Believable able to be believed.
Plausible believable.
Implausible unbelievable.
Incredible unbelievable.
Appositive a noun or noun phrase that renames the noun or noun phrase immediately before it.
Direct address a person is directly addressed, or spoken to directly, in a sentence.
Root word the base word part.
Prefix a word part that precedes the root word.
Suffix a word part that follows a the root word.
-cred- root word meaning "believe"
in- prefix meaning "not"
im- prefix meaning "not"
un- prefix meaning "not"
non- prefix meaning "not"
-ible suffix meaning "able to"
-able suffix meaning "able to"
-ly suffix that turns the root into an adverb meaning "in this manner"; [happily = in a happy manner]
-ed suffix that makes a verb past tense.
