Term | Definition |
---|---|
Solve | |
Simplify | |
Evaluate | Use the order of operations to find the value of a numerical expression. Substitute a number for each value in an algebraic expression. Then follow the order of operations. 3x + 5 for when x is = 6 3 (6) + 5 = 23 |
Variable | A symbol that represents one or more numbers. |
Constant | A term without a variable. |
Negative | Numbers that are less than 0 |
Positive | Numbers that are greater than 0 |
Expression | Mathematical phrase that contains numbers, operations and/or variables. |
Equation | Mathematical sentence that uses an equal sign to show that two expressions are equal |
Commutative Properties of Addition | changing the order of the addends does not change the sum. 8 + 2 = 10 2 + 8 = 10 |
Commutative Properties of Multiplication | Changing the order of the factors does not change the product. 5 x 2 = 10 2 x 5 = 10 |
Associative Properties of Addition | Changing the grouping of addends does not change the sum. 4+ (3+6)= 13 (4+3) +6 = 13 |
Associative Properties of Multiplication | Changing the grouping of the factors does not change the product. 6 x (2 x 5 ) = 60 (6 x 2) x 5 = 60 |
Distributive Property | To multiply a sum or difference by a number, multiply each number in the sum or difference by the number in the parentheses. Then Evaluate. 3 ( 9+ 2) 3(9) + 3(2) 27 + 6 = 33 |
Inverse of Subtraction | Addition x - 12 = 20 + 12 +12 x = 32 |
Additive Inverse | Subtraction x + 10 = 16 -10 -10 x = 6 |
Term | The parts if an algebraic expression. 3x + 7 3x, 7 are the terms |
Coefficient | The number associated with the variable |
Like terms | Terms that have the same variable 3X + 5X |
difference of | Subtraction |
quotient | Division answer |
Product | Multiplication answer |
