Term | Definition |
---|---|
Ocean | A large body of salt water (H2O).It covers about 70% of Earth Surface. |
Evaporation | The changing of a liquid into gas. |
Ice Sheet | a large covering of ice and snow that lasts a long time. |
Fresh Water | Water (H2O) that has little or no salt. |
Water Vapor | Water (H2O) in the form of an invisible, odorless gas. |
Glacier | A large body of ice that moves slowly over land. |
Clouds | Are made up of tiny H2O droplets or ice crystals. |
Sea Breeze | The movement of air form water to land. |
Land Breeze | the movement of air from land to water. |
Condensation | The changing of a gas into a liquid. |
Water Cycle | The continuous movement of water from a liquid state or the ground to a vapor state in the air and back again. |
Precipitation | Water droplets that form in the atmosphere and fall to the ground. |
Fog | A Stratus cloud that forms near the ground. |
Reservoir | A human-made lake that is used to store water. |
Dam | A barrier that prevents the normal flow of water. |
Groundwater | Water beneath earths surface. |
Aquifer | An underground layer of rock that can hold water. |
Flood | The overflow of water onto land. |
Contaminate or Pollute | To make dirty or impure. |
Safe Drinking Act-1974 | A law to make drinking water safe |
Clean Water Act-1977 | makes it illegal to throw pollutants into surface water... (streams, river, lake, ocean) |
Water Shed | The area where water drains into a river. ( California has 10) |
Groundwater | Water beneath earths surface |
Dam | A barrier that prevents the normal flow of water. |
aquifer | an underground layer of rock that can hold water |
reservoir | a human made lake that is used to store water |
aqueduct | a pathway built by people |
drought | a long period of dry weather |
reclamation | making something usable again |
conservation | save something to be sure there is enough |
air pressure | Air pressing onto a surface |
altitude | how high something is above earth's surface |
humidity | The amount of water vapor in the air |
troposphere | The layer of earth's atmosphere closest to the surface |
atmosphere | All of the air surrounding the earth |
barometers | Tools use to measure air pressure |
The angle of sunlight | 180, 150, 120, 90, 120, 150, 180. |
Direct and Slanted Beams of Light | 90, 120, 150, 180. |
global winds | winds that blow in predictable directions over long distances all the time. |
convection | Heat going from one place to another through movement of a gas or liquid. |
Climate | climate is the average weather condition of a place. |
current | A current is the ongoing movement of ocean water |
El Nino | When the wind blow Toward the Americas. They push moist air, heavy rains, and storms onto the wast coasts of N and S America. This happens every 2-7 years. |
Air Mass | A large amount of air that has similar temperature and humidity thoughout |
Monsoon | A seasonal wind that brings heavy rain-South east Asia |
front | The meeting place between two air mass |
Thunderstorm | A storm that includes rainy thunder and lightning |
Cyclone | A storm with low pressure at its center and spinning winds. Ex. tornado- overland........hurricane-over water |
3 Steps to a Thunderstorm | 1. Cold front 2. thunderheads 3. precipitation falls |
Storm Surge | A large rise in the ehight of ocean water caused by a hurricane |
Tornado Alley | The part of the U.S. where cold, dry air form Canada meets warm, moist air formt he Gulf of Mexico. |
Hurricane | Is a very large spinnig storm with winds over 73 mph |
How a Tornado Forms | 1 Thunderhead- Warm air moves upward 2 Funnel Cloud- is formed when air starts spinning in the cloud 3 Tornado-the tunnel cloud touches the ground it becomes a tornado |
Tornadoes | is a spinning cloud shaped like a funnel, with winds up to 299 mph. |
Low Pressure Closure | An area of low pressure surrounded by an area of high pressure |
Meteorologist | A scientist who specializes in the study of Earth's atmosphere and weather |
Forecast | To make a guess a about what may happen based on careful observation |
Weather Map | A map that shows weather conditions over an area at a given time. |
