CH11 WORDS LIFE S
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Atom | the smallest unit of an element that maintains of that element |
electron | a subatomic practice that has a negative charge |
nucleus | the positively charged central core of an atom, consisting of protons and neutrons and containing nearly all its mass. |
proton | a stable subatomic particle occurring in all atomic nuclei, with a positive electric charge equal in magnitude to that of an electron, but of opposite sign. |
atomic mass | unit mass that describes the mass of a atom or molecule |
neutron | subatomic particle of about the same mass as a proton but without an electric charge |
atomic number | It is approximately equivalent to the number of protons and neutrons in the atom |
electron cloud | is an informal term in physics. It is used to describe where electrons are when they go around the nucleus of an atom. |
isotope | An isotope is a form of a chemical element whose atomic nucleus contains a specific number of neutron s, in addition to the number of proton s that uniquely defines the element. The nuclei of most atom s contain neutrons as well as protons. |
mass number | the total number of protons and neutrons in a nucleus. |
atomic mass | the mass of an atom of a chemical element expressed in atomic mass units. It is approximately equivalent to the number of protons and neutrons in the atom (the mass number) or to the average number allowing for the relative abundances of different isotope |
