Keyboarding Terms and definitions
Term | Definition |

Arrow Keys | keys on a keyboard that move the cursor left or right, up or down |
Backspace | using the backspace key on the keyboard that moves the cursor to the left one space at a time and on some keyboards and with most word processing software - deletes characters |
Block Style | a letter style in which all lines of the letter are aligned with the left margin |

Caps Lock | key on the keyboard that is used to key all capital letters without holding the shift key |
Dateline | the date that the letter was created |
Delete | function used to erase characters once they are highlighted |

Double Space | when keying text, the act of spacing text two lines apart |
Enter Key | key on the keyboard that is used to enter information into a computer or to return the cursor to the beginning of a new line |
Ergonomics | The science concerned with designing safe and comfortable machines for humans. In the computer field, ergonomics plays an important role in the design of monitors and keyboards and furniture. |
E S C key | key on the keyboard that is used to exit a program |
Graphing | a feature in a software program that allows numerical data to be interpreted as a graph or chart |
Guide Words | a heading typed at the beginning of a memorandum consisting of TO, FROM, DATE, SUBJECT; these four words should be typed in bold, all caps and should be followed by a colon |
Home Row Keys | A, S, D, F, J, K, L, AND SEMICOLON (;) - these are designated as the keys from which all keystrokes are made. This is considered to be the starting point for hands when beginning to keyboard. |
Insert | key on the keyboard or function of word processing software that is used to insert text without deleting previously keyed text |
Keyboarding | the ability to enter text by using the correct fingers without looking at the keys |
Left Bound Report | multi-page reports that are bound or stapled on the left side of the pages; the left margin is set wider to allow space for binding |
Letter Keys | keys on a keyboard which contain the letters of the alphabet |
