What is "Straight Ranking"? | The simplest method, a superior lists the subordinates from best to worst, on the basis of overall performance. Can also be ranked with regard to specific duties, such as attendance, record of meeting deadlines, quality of reports, etc. |
What is Alternative Ranking? | (1)-Put the best subordinate at the head of the list and the worst at the bottom, usually by overall performance. (2) Select best & worst from remaining; middle position is last to be filled. Can be used by supervisors & by the subordinates. |
What is the Paired Comparison method? | Comparing each employee to each other, 2 at a time, to determine which is better. Rank can be obtained by counting the # of times each individual is selected as the better of a pair. Subordinate with the most favorable comparisons is thus ranked first |
What is the forced distribution method? | Divided into 5 categories, with a fixed % of all subordinates in the group falling within each category. Typically, the distribution follows a normal "bell-shaped" pattern. |
What is the "Narrative Essay" method of appraising? | Using this form, the rater can describe the employee's strengths and weaknesses and suggest methods for improving performance. |
What is the "Conventional Rating" method of appraising? | also called graphic rating scales or Likert scales. Most widely used. Conventional forms use personality characteristics (traits), rather than actual behaviors, as indicators of performance, such as aggressiveness, independence, maturity, responsibility |
