rhyme | words sound alike because they share the same ending vowel and consonant sound |
rhythm | the beat created by the sounds of the words in a poem, can be created by meter, rhyme, alliteration, and refrain |
lines | a group of words together on one line of the poem |
stanzas | a group of lines arranged together, usually develops on idea, gives poem structure, emphasizes different ideas, beginning of a new stanza often signals beginning of a new image thought or idea |
meter | patterns of stresses and unstressed syllables, occurs when the stressed and unstressed syllables of the words in a poem are arranged in a repeating pattern |
rhyme scheme | a pattern of rhyme (usually end rhyme but not always) uses letters of the alphabet to represent sounds to be able to visually see the pattern |
end rhyme | word at the end of one line rhymes with a word at the end of another line |
internal scheme | a word inside a line rhymes with another word on the same line |
rhyming couplets | 2 lines of poetry that rhyme and have the same meter |
lyric poetry | form of poetry which expresses thoughts and feelings of a single speaker |
sonnet | a poem that expresses thoughts in 14 lines |
ode | a poem in which a person expresses a strong feeling of love |
elegy | a song, poem, or speech expressing grief for one who is dead |
narrative poetry | a form of poetry that tells a story |
epic | a long narrative poem, usually chronicling the deeds of a folk hero and written using bothe dramatic and narrative literary techniques |
ballad | a simple narrative poem, story told through action and dialogue, deals with subjects such as adventure, love, jealousy, heroism, disaster, revenge |
free verse poetry | poetry written without a regular rhyme, rhythm, and form, sounds like natural like everyday conversation |
limerick | a short, funny poem, AABBA rhyme scheme |
concrete (shape) poem | type of poetry that uses some sort of usual presentation to enhance the effect of the poem on the reader |
haiku | traditional for of japanese poetry composed of three lines, used to capture a moment, express a feeling, and or celebrate some phase or element of nature |
clerihew | a whimsical, four line biographical poem |
cinquain | 5 line poem |
diamante | 7 line poem describes two nouns opposite each other |
definition poem | takes a word or concept and attempts to define it, provide perspective, redefine it, or create a definitive example of it |
acrostic poetry | uses a word for its subject, each line begins with a letter of the subject word |
I am poetry | it takes a stand on something, most often describes the author |
couplet | a pair of rhyming lines that usually have the same meter and length |
