LD ES - Introduction
LD Earth Science - Intro Welcome to Earth Science
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Earth Science | Study of Earth's systems and setting in the universe. |
Coordinate System | Grid on which each location has a unique designation defined by the intersection of two lines; for example, latitude and longitude. |
Density | Mass per unit volume of a substance. |
Astronomy | Study of the motions and properties of objects in space. |
Engineering | Application of science and mathematics to solving problems. |
Exponential Notation | (scientific notation) Mathematical shorthand in which numbers are written in the form M x 10n, where M is a number 1 or greater, but less than 10, and 10n is power of 10. |
Geology | Study of what Earth is made of and how it changes. |
Inference | Conclusion based on observations and experiences; something that is thought out, but not directly observed; an interpretation. |
Instrument | Device that makes observations or measurements easier to perform or more precise. |
Mass | Quantity of matter in an object, measured in kilogram or other units mass. |
Measurement | Observation of a quantity made using an instrument. |
Meteorology | Study of the changing conditions of the atmosphere, or weather. |
Observation | Information obtained directly from the senses. |
Percent Division | Mathematical method of comparing a measurement with the commonly accepted value for that measurement; percent error from accepted value. |
Scientific Notation | Mathematical shorthand in which numbers are written in the form M x 10n, where M is a number 1 or greater, but less than 10, and 10n is power of 10. |
Sense | Any of the five means by which we directly observe our environment (sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch). |
Volume | Amount of space that matter occupies |
