Which organ is the most important of all the five major organs? What is the name given to it, because of this? The heart is the "king" of the organs.
What double yin-yang specification is given to the Heart? Heart: yang of the yang
What is the heart's sensing organ? emotion? liquid? sibling organ? element? Sensing organ: tongue, Emotion: happiness, Liquid: sweat, Sibling organ: small intestine, Element: fire
Where is the health of the Heart shown on the exterior of the body? Shown in the face.
Describe the function of the arteries and veins in relation to the heart. The heart pumps blood. The arteries receive blood from the heart to circulate through the lungs and the rest of the body. The veins bring blood back to the heart from the lungs and the rest of the body.
What are the blood vessels responsible for in relation to blood, and what is the name given to this function? Blood vessels are responsible for containing the blood, so they are called the "house" of the blood.
How do the smallest vessels maintain the integrity of the blood volume? They allow liquid to flow into or out of the tissues and organs, while allowing oxygen, nutrients and immune system components to pass into the tissues appropriately.
What other 3 organs are closely related to the functions of the heart? Lung, Spleen, Liver
Where is food-chi formed? Where is it converted into blood? What chi is needed for assistance in this function? Food chi is formed in the Spleen, converted to blood in the Heart, with the assistance of original chi from the Kidneys.
What are the outward symptoms of a well-functioning heart (4)? Good perfusion to arms, legs, hands and feet, normal temperature, appropriate perspiration, complexion is pink and full of vitality.
What are the outward symptoms of blood deficiency from the heart (4)? Perfusion is impaired, hands and feet are cold to the touch, complexion of face is pale white. Tongue is deep red and become thin.
What is a sign on the face that blood flow is blocked (1)? Face is blue.
What are signs on the face that there are blood clots (1)? Lips and face are purple or green hew.
What are signs on the face that there is dilation of the blood vessels (1)? Complexion is overly red.
What are signs on the face that there is too much heat in the heart (2)? What about extreme heat (1)? Tongue is red and dry. Extreme heat leads to tongue and mouth blisters.
What are signs on the face of heart blockage (1)? Tongue will be dark purple or have bruise spots.
What are signs of a stroke (3)? Tongue becomes stiff and speech is impaired. Difficulty in selecting and remembering words can occur.
Illness of the heart can lead to what conditions related to speech (3)? Speech abnormalities such as stuttering, laughing inappropriately, continuous talking without appropriate pauses in conversation (either from excess or deficiency).
What is the relationship between the heart and heart chi? The heart pushes heart chi to the tissues of the heart itself to maintain a regular rate and rhythm.
What type of chi and another substance do the vessels of the entire body require for support? Heart chi and blood.
What are signs related to the heart of sufficient heart chi (2)? Heart rate is regular and pulse is normal due to strong contractility of the heart.
What are signs related to the heart of heart chi deficiency (4)? Heart rate is irregular, pulse is weak, spontaneous sweating, face is shiny-white.
What are signs related to bod fluids of heart yin chi deficiency (1)? Night sweats
What are signs on the face of heart yang chi deficiency (2)? Tongue is white and swollen.
What is Chung Chi and how does it relate to the heart? Chung Chi is a combination of lung chi and nutrition chi that together influence heart chi. Lung chi comes from above, and nutrition chi comes from below.
What are the spiritual attributes of the heart (2)? The heart controls the spirit and houses the mind.
What mental activities are associated with the heart (4)? Thought, memory, emotion and sleep. Blood is the foundation of the mind.
How does the heart affect the mind under good conditions (2)? Adequate and proper oxygenated blood flow to the brain creates clear thinking and memory; the person appears vibrant and in a good emotional state.
How does the heart affect the mind under poor conditions (3)? If blood flow is poor due to heart failure (for example), thinking may be clouded or dull and memory poor. Person may feel depressed and sleepy during the day.
What is the outward reflection of the mind and spirit called? Shen
What are signs (2) on the face of the presence of Shen? Person with shen will have active and bright eyes. Complexion is vibrant and reflects energy
How are Shen, Chi and Jing related? The condition of the jing and chi can be seen through the eyes, which reflects the spirit of the Liver. Strong jing leads to strong chi, which leads to the presence of shen.
What activities (1) of shen are related to the heart? Mental activities.
What activities (1) of shen are related to the liver? Spirit.
What activities (1) of shen are related to the lungs? Corporeal soul (Po).
What activities (1) of shen are related to the kidneys? Will Power (Zhi).
What activities (1) of shen are related to the Spleen? Thought (Yi).
What does Shen encompass? Entire spectrum of mental and spiritual activities including the associated emotions.
What happens (2) to heart chi when a person is happy? Heart chi is appropriate and flows smoothly.
What happens (2) to heart chi when a person is overly happy? Heart chi can become scattered and lost.
What happens (1) with extreme, uncontrolled, excessive, sustained elation? Mental illness: bipolar disease.
What are signs (3) related to emotions of insufficient heart chi? Sadness, depression, possibly difficult to form and maintain interpersonal relationships.
What can happen to the heart with emotional illnesses such as depression (4)? Sadness, palpitations, and irregular heart rate. Chi and jing can also be influenced.
Where is the water for sweat derived? Blood
What are the effects (3) of normal heart function on sleep? Normal heart blood leads to normal sleep: fall asleep without delay, sleep restfully, awake properly.
What are the effects (3) of weak heart blood on sleep? Weak heart blood leads to difficulty falling asleep, restless sleep, excessive dreaming.
What outside evil chi is the heart most susceptible to? And through which organ? Heat through the pericardium.
What is the pericardium? The pericardium is the gate of the heart. It protects the heart, and is also related to the triple heater.
What happens (1) when heat attacks the pericardium? Delirium.
