Earth Science Final Exam Review Szerdy

TermDefinition
light year The distance that light can travel in a year.
Solar System A star and all of the things controlled by that star's gravity.
Galaxy A group of billions of stars, star systems, dust, and gas held together by gravity.
Star An object made of gas that produces its own light and heat by nuclear fusion.
planet A large body of rock or gas that orbits a star, is a sphere, and has cleared it's orbit.
Gravity The force that pulls matter together to form stars and planets.
Blue The color of the hottest stars.
Red The color of the coolest star.
rotation spinning on the Axis (Example: Earth's = 1 day = 24 hours)
Revolution Orbiting another object in space. (Earth's = 1 year = 365 days)
heliocentric Theory that states the Sun is in the center, other planets orbit the Sun. (Thought to be correct)
Geocentric Theory that states the Earth is in the center, other planets and the Sun orbit Earth. (Thought to be wrong)
Seasons Caused by the tilt of Earth's axis. Hemisphere tilted toward the sun receives more direct sunlight.
Moon Phase As the moon revolves around the Earth, different amounts of the light side of the moon are visible.
Solar Eclipse The moon blocks the sun, casts a shadow on the Earth.
Lunar Eclipse The Earth blocks the sun, Casts a shadow on the moon.
Tides Caused by gravitational pull of moon. Water is in line with the moon.
Atmosphere A layer of gas around a planet that affects the planet's temperature.
