Revise Matter and Separating Mixtures

QuestionAnswer
Give the definition for Matter. Matter is anything which occupies space and has mass.
What are the 3 states of matter? Solid, Liquid, Gas.
Can you describe the properties of a solid? Solids have a definite shape, definite volume and do not flow.
Can you describe the properties of a liquid? Liquids have no definite shape, have a definite mass and can flow and evaporate.
Can you describe the properties of a gas? Gases have no definite shape, no definite volume and can be compressed.
Can you describe the arrangement of molecules in a solid, a liquid and a gas? In solids the particles are aranged in a regular order. In liquids the particles are in contact with each other but can slide over each other. In gases the particles are spread out over the entire space and rarely touch.
What causes matter to change state? Adding or taking away heat.
What is meant by evaporation? Evaporation is when liquids have enough energy to break away from each other and turn into a gas.
What is meant by condensation? Condensation is when a gas comes in contact with a cold surface and the gas turns back into a liquid.
What is meant by freezing? Freezing is when a liquid loses enough heat to turn into a solid.
What is meant by melting? Melting is when a solid heats up enough to turn into a liquid.
What is filtrate? Filtrate is the liquid that is come out after filtering.
What is residue? Residue is when a liquid evaporates and any solids that were in the liquid are left behind as residue.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
