Health and Safety in the Workplace

What is the Health and Safety at Work Act? Health and Safety at Work Act makes employers legally responsible for the health and safety of their employees
What MUST employers provide for their employees in the work place? Employers MUST provide safety equipment and training, maintain machines, have a safety policy and first aid facilities.
What is the legal responsibility of employees when it comes to Health and Safety? Employees are legally responsible for using safety equipment provided as well as safety guards on machines and wearing protective clothing.
What is a risk assessment? This is an assessment that outlines what must be done to make the work area safe for employees
Name three things that a risk assessment looks at. Using tools and equipment Using materials and chemicals Correct protective clothing Safe working practices
Who checks the risk assessment? A Health and Safety Inspector has to check the risk assessment
What must you think about when writing a risk assessment? What could go wrong? What effect would this have? What can I do to prevent it happening? What precautions should I take to minimise the risk?
What are the risk of using sewing machines? What should they be fitted with to minimise risk? Finger and eye injuries. Guards to minimise the risk of finger and eye injuries. Dust extractors to minimise the inhalation of dust. Emergency stop buttons
What precautions should be taken when working with sharp objects? Take care, use non-slip mats and steel safety rules with craft knives Point blades away from the body when carrying them, and put covers on the blades Wear thimbles when using pins and needles
What information should you know about when using chemicals? Most chemicals have COSHH (control of substances hazardous to health) guidelines which tell you the hazards, how to use, store and dispose of the chemicals safely and what protective equipment to wear.
What precautions should be taken when using toxic chemicals? Good ventilation to avoid inhaling vapours, protective clothing for the skin, and safety glasses.
What precautions should be taken when using flammable chemicals? Flammable solvents should be kept away from sources of ignition.
Name some items of protective clothing and their uses. Wear chain mail gloves when using cutting machines. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection when using chemicals. Tie hair back or wear a hair net to stop hair getting caught in machinery. Wear ear protection when using noisy machinery.
What things should be done to make a factory safe? The room layout must be safe. There must be enough space around each machine. Walkways and exits must be kept clear, and workspaces should be kept tidy. There must be enough light, preferably natural light
What should be clearly displayed in a factory? Safety notices should be displayed
Why should employees take regular breaks in textile manufacture? Employees must take regular breaks so that they don’t get tired and lose concentration
Why should training be given to people on how to use machinery and other hazardous things in a factory. So that they know how to use these things properly and safely.
Why should machinery be well maintained? To ensure that it runs safely and is not faulty.
What are the advantages of some machines in a textiles factory to employees in terms of health and safety. The machines do jobs that can be risky to people - lifting heavy weights, cutting.
What do you need to know for the exam. You need to be able to detail possible hazards, safe working practices, protective guards, clothing and systems in place to protect workers.
Name three things that health and safety officers do. Carry out risk assessments Organise training, including first aid. Display warning notices, safety rules and fire exit signs. Make sure that machinery and equipment is stored safely.
Name three more things that health and safety officers do. Make sure that machinery and equipment have safety guards and is safe for use. Make sure that machinery and equipment is tested regularly for safety. Check that workers wear protective clothing: ear defenders, masks, safety gloves and footwear
Name another three things that health and safety officers do. Ensure all processes are safe/not damage the employees’ health. Ensure chemicals are recorded, stored /used safely then recycled/ disposed of safely. Check workplace is safe, clean and tidy/good ventilation to remove fumes/ has noise-level control.
