LD ELA TKAM

LD TKAM Chapters 12 to 16

QuestionAnswer
Why won't Scout be able to see Dill this summer? He has a new dad and their building a fishing boat in Meridian.
Why do Jem and Scout go to church with Cal? Because Atticus was gone for two weeks and Cal wasn't sure whether the teacher was going to be there and didn't want to leave them home by themselves.
Why aren't there any hymn books at Cal's church? Because only 4 people know how to read.
What new things does Scout learn here about how the black people live? They are poor and yet willing to give to Helen Robinson; they are uneducated and do not know how to read; the preacher (Rev Sykes) calls out individuals to correct sins.
What does Scout learn from Calpurnia's account of Zeebo's education? Calpurnia taught Zeebo to read from the Bible
Explain why Calpurnia speak differently in the Finch household, and among her neighbors at church. Cal speaks her finest english around the Finch's but in order for her to fit in in her community she speaks like them.
Who is waiting on the front steps of the Finch home when the children and Cal return from church? Aunt Alexandria
Why does Aunt Alexandria come to stay with Atticus and his family? She comes to help teach Scout how to act like a lady and give her some feminine influence.
What is Aunt Alexandria like? She is welcomed by everyone, fits right into the social scene, and cares a great deal about heredity
Alexandria thinks that Scout is "dull" (not clever). Why does she think this, and is she right? Because she does nothing alone and she does nothing when shes with her friends.
Are all adults good at knowing how clever young people are? Adults are not good at knowing how clever young people are.
How does Aunt Alexandria involver herself in Maycomb's social life? She visits the neighbours and involves herself with community and church affairs. She fits into society like a hand into a glove.
Comment on Aunt Alexandria's ideas about breeding and family. Why does Atticus tell them to forget it? She doesn't think that marrying your cousin is bad. Atticus tells them to forget all of the rules that are implied to be a Finch.
Who do you think is right about breeding and family? Atticus is right because Jemm and Scout should grow up to be their own people and not like any other person in the family.
How does Atticus explain rape? He says that it was "carnal knowledge of a female by force and without consent."
How is this a good example for a child Scout's age? Scout seems smart for her age, she may not know all the details, but it was enough for her to sort of understand what happened.
Why does Alexandra think Atticus should dismiss Calpurnia? Since she has moved in, they can dismiss Calpurnia. Aunt Alexandra prefers that the children are raised by a white woman and not a black woman.
How does Atticus respond to this suggestion? Tells her that Cal is already part of the family & the children see her as something close to mother. He doesn't want heartbreaks to happen & Cal was doing a great job towards teaching the children their manners...that there was no reason to dismiss her.
Why is Scout please when Jem fights her back? Scout is worried about Jem growing up and separating himself from her. When Jem fights back, it is just like old times; Scout still feels that a little of her childhood is alive.
What do we learn from Dill's account of his running away? Still tells lies and exaggerates too much. Some of what Dill said was probably true. For example, his new father probably did not play with him or build a boat with him. But some of his story was probably a lie.
What is the "nightmare" that now descends upon the children? Scout & Jem witness the hatred of the mob and the horrors of racism, and see their father in a vulnerable, and perhaps deadly, position.
What was (and is) the Klu Klux Klan? The KKK rose in response to the massive immigration and dislike of certain religious groups. Specifically, in this book, you need to know that the KKK was against African Americans.
What do you think about Atticus' comment about the KKK? He was partly right about his comment that the KKK would not really go near Maycomb but I think he was also aware that they still existed and were out there. Atticus did not want to worry Scout or Jem.
How does Jem react when Atticus tells him to go home and why? He rufuses to go home, he just says "no" and he stays there. He reacts that way because he is very worried that these men will do something to Atticus. He thinks he might be able help out if anything bad were to happen.
What persuades the lynching party to give up their attempt on Tom's life? Scout's polite conversation about one of the son's (Walter Cunningham) having lunch at her house and a one-sided discussion of "entailments" diffuses the mob anger and makes the men feel ashamed to be threatening Scout's father.
How does Scout affect events without realizing it at the time? Scout does not realize that by having this conversation, she might have saved her father's life! If she did not talk to Mr. Cunningham, the mob might have attacked and/or killed Atticus.
What subtle change does Scout notice in her father? All the pressure & stress are getting harder. He is worried because of the court case. Atticus is not home as much. He thinks that he might have a chance to win at the Tom Robinson trial even though he has been disappointed in his town recently.
What sort of person is Dolphus Raymond? A white man from a rich family who lives with a black women and their children; the white community look down on him as he seems permanently drunk, but Scout and Dill learn that by this he is giving the white community a reason for his schosen way of life
How does Reverend Skyes help the children see and her the trial? He takes the children (Jem, Scout, & Dill) up into the balcony where only the black people are allowed to be. He did this because the "white section" on the first floor was full.
What type of people make up the jury? Farmers and country folks.
Describe Judge Taylor's attitude to his job. Very laid back & people think he is sleeping. He is paying close attention to what everyone is saying.
Do you think he takes the trial seriously or not? By appointing Atticus, the best lawyer in area, to be Tom's lawyer because he knows that Atticus will try hard to prove Tom innocent even though Tom is black.
