Dynamic Earth

crust the thin layer of earth that we live on
mantle the thick layer of the earth underneath the crust
inner core the solid ball of metal in the middle of the earth
outer core the liquid layer of the earth that moves around the inner core causing Earth's magnetism
magma melted rock underneath the earth's surface
molten melted
tectonic plates plates underneath the Earth's surface, which constantly move
compression the tectonic plates pushing together
shearing the tectonic plates sliding against each other
tension the tectonic plates pulling apart
tremor the shaking of the ground which usually follows an earthquake
fault line the place where the tectonic plates connect
landslide when an earthquake dislodges the soil on a mountain or hill
liquefaction when an earthquake shakes the ground so much that the ground becomes liquid
seismic wave the waves of energy that travel through the earth after an earthquake
P wave first seismic waves after an earthquake
S wave the slowest seismic waves
surface wave seismic waves that travel through the surface
epicentre the place directly above the hypoocentre
focus/hypocentre the place where the earthquake first starts
seismograph the device used to measure an earthquake
Mercalli scale the scale used to measure the intensity/damage of an earthquake
Richter scale this is the older scale used to measure an earthquake that mostly media use
Moment Magnitude scale the scale used by seismologists to record the amount of energy released by the earthquake
