The Dynamic Earth

mantle the second layer of the earths layer. It is made of silicon and magnesium
crust the top layer of the earth
inner core the bottom layer. it is a solid
outer core the middle layer. it is a liquid that is so hot that it melts the mantle.

tectonic plates The dozen or so plates that make up the surface of the Earth.
shearing the sliding past movement of the tectonic plates
tension the pulling apart of the tectonic plates
compression the tectonic plates pushing together
tremor a trembling or quivering effect
fault line the intersection of a fault with the surface of the earth
landslide the downward falling of a mass of soil or rock on or from a steep slope.
liquefaction when the solid crust turns into a liquid
seismic wave a wave of energy that is generated by an earthquake
p wave first wave to be recorded on a seismograph. fastest wave
s wave second wave to reach a seismograph
surface wave a seismic wave that travels parallel to the earths surface
epicentre the focus point of an earthquake
hypocentre where the tectonic plates split
seismograph instrument for measuring earthquakes.
tsunami large sea wave produced by a seaquake
mercalli scale measures earthquakes damage
richter scale measures earthquakes magnitude
moment magnitude measures earthquakes magnitude
scale the instrument that measures an earthquake
