| key word | words that are central to a document's main idea, such as definitions, dates, headings and specific examples |
| margin | the narrow column on the side of a page |
| reference source | a document containing factual information |
| reliability | the accuracy or dependability of a reference source |
| scan | to read quickly to find a specific fact or detail |
| synthesize | to combine ideas to create a new idea |

| context | the surrounding words or sentences that help explain the meaning of a particular word or expression |

| symbol | a visual image that stands for an idea or concept |
