| couplet | two rhymed lines of poetry |
| diction | specific words an author chooses |
| figurative language | using language to create a particular effect; simile, metaphor, and personification |
| hyperbole | extreme exaggeration |
| imagery | when an author uses words to create a picture in the mind of the reader |
| metaphor | a comparison of two unlike things |
| narrator | one who tells the story |
| onomatopoeia | when the sound of a word is the word |
| paraphrase | to restate writing in your own words |
| parody | an imitation of something, usually with the intent to make fun |
| personification | to give human qualities to something that is not human |
| simile | comparison between two unlike things using like or as to make the comparison |
| stanza | a group of lines in poetry; paragraph |
| tone | the attitude or behavior the speaker has toward the subject; formal, informal, humorous, serious, etc. |
