entente an understanding between nations.
balance of power a situation in which each side has equal power.

Neutrality a policy of not taking sides. Switzerland remained neutral during the Great War.

trench warfare trenches were ditches that were dug by the soldiers, and reached from the English Channel into Switzerland. Soldiers fought from the trenches. This type of warfare caused the war to stall and drag on for four years.
