Element Properties

TermDefinition
Atomic Number The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which determines the chemical properties and its place on the periodic table. A protons are a positive charge in the center of the atom
Atomic Weight ( Atomic Mass ) the average mass of atoms of an element
Electron Affinity the change in energy of a neutral atom when a electron is added to the atom to form a negative ion.
Electronegativity A property of an atom which is increases with its tendency to attract the electrons of a bond
Atomic Radius A measure of the size of atoms usually the distance from the center of the nucleus to the boundary of the surrounding sloud of electrons
Metallic Character the level of reactivity of a metal. a set of chemical properties associated with the elements that are metals.
Types Of Chemical Bonds Formed
Valence Electrons an electron that is associated with an atom, and that can participate, in the formation of a chemical bond
Ionization Energy an atom or molecule that describes the minimum amount of energy required to remove an electron from the atom or molecule in the gaseous state
Melting Point the temperature at which a solid will melt
