Sustainability. Textiles and the environment.

QuestionAnswer
What is the meaning of the word 'sustainability'. Able to be used without being completely used up or destroyed Involving methods that do not completely use up or destroy natural resources
What do you understand by the term 'sustainable textiles,. These are textiles that have a minimal impact on the environment.
Give two ways in which the textiles industry uses up the world's natural resources. Coal and oil used to provide energy in production. Fuels used to transport textiles across the world. Large amounts of water used up in manufacturing processes.
Suggest two ways of reducing the amount of waste from textiles products that go into landfill. Recycle waste fabric, reduce packaging, reuse products.
Explain how Fairtrade organic cotton is produced and why it is sustainable. Organic cotton is farmed without the use of artificial fertilsers, pesticides or herbicides (chemicals). This is much better for the environment. Fairtrade means that workers are paid a fair wage and work in good conditions.
Give three ways in which the textiles industry can harm the environment. Synthetic fabrics made from coal and oil. Lots of energy needed in textiles production. Lots of water used. Textiles transported across the world. Toxic chemicals used to grow and dye textiles. Textiles thrown away into landfill.
What are some of the ethical concerns in the Textiles industry in the third world? Poor conditions, child labour, slave labour, very low pay, lack of health and safety - people have to do very dangerous things.
Name two textiles manufacturing processes that use chemicals. Dyeing and finishing
Why is it not sustainable to throw textiles away? Waste of materials. One third of landfill in the uk is textiles.
What are some ways that designers can make products more sustainable? Design reusable products, source local materials, use recycled materials and components, use natural dyes, use fabric that can be washed at a lower temperature.
Some fabrics are made from mixed fibres and need to be dyed twice because they require different types of dye. Briefly explain why this is a problem for the environment. The dyeing process uses energy, lots of water and toxic dyes.It produces chemical waste and contaminates rivers. Dyeing twice means twice the environmental impact.
Suggest two ways to make the dyeing process more environmentally friendly. Use natural dyes, use cold water dyes.
Suggest three ways in which you can recycle textile products at home. Charity shops, textile banks, reuse the materials, swap with friends, give away.
Why is it sustainable to buy textile products made locally from natural fibres that are farmed/harvested locally? There is no transport across the world involved using up precious oil and coal.
What is meant by 'upcycling'? This is customising and existing textile product to give it a new lease of life.
What is Tencel? This is a fabric that is made using a very efficient process that recycles water and produces very little waste.
What can be made from plastic bottles? Polyester fleece can be made from recycled plastic bottles.
What are biofibres and why can they be sustainable? Biofibres are natural fibres that come from renewable sources.
What does 'renewable' mean? capable of being renewed; replaceable; "renewable energy such as solar energy is theoretically inexhaustible"
