Theme The main message the poet tries to bring across to the reader
Voice the individual writing style of an author -a combination of their techniques
Epiphany a sudden insight or realization that changes the reader's understanding. In other words, it is the "Ah-ha" moment Mrs. Quach talks about
mood the atmosphere of a poem that evokes certain feelings or vibes in readers through words and descriptions.
Allusion reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance Ex.“Don’t act like a Romeo in front of her.” “This place is like a Garden of Eden.”
Apostrophe figure of speech in which the poet addresses an absent person, an abstract idea, or a thing. ex. Death is coming Time is unfair Justice is evil
Analogy comparison of two pairs which have the same relationship but different meaning. Ex. Sleep and death - they share a lack of animation and a recumbent position
wit a form of humor that is wise and cleve
Style technique a writer uses
Denotation "dictionary definition." ex.snake in a dictionary=scaly, legless, sometimes venomous reptiles
Connotation the meanings of a word that may be related with the denotative meaning(s). ex. Snake = evil, dangerous
Tone -an attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience -conveyed through the choice of words or the viewpoint of the writer on a subject
