Plate Tectonics Test

Use these to study for the science test on 4/23

QuestionAnswer
A layer of the Earth that is made of soft rock. Asthenosphere
A layer of the Earth that is made from hard, rigid rock. Lithosphere
What type of plate boundary can cause rift valleys? Divergent plate boundaries.
What type of plate boundary can create mountains and/or volcanoes? Convergent plate boundaries.
What type of plate boundary can cause earthquakes to occur? Transform plate boundaries.
Name Earth's layers, starting with the innermost layer. Inner Core; Outer Core; Mantle; Asthenosphere; Lithosphere; Crust
Who created the theory of continental drift? What evidence was there to support it? Alfred Wegener first created the theory of continental drift. It said that the plates once formed a super-continent called Pangaea. There were many pieces of evidence to support it; for example, glossopteris, a fern, was found on two separate continents.
What was the theory of plate tectonics? J Tuzo Wilson created the theory of plate tectonics. It combined the ideas of continental drift and seafloor spreading to explain how the continents moved and why. Because it could explain this idea, this theory was accepted into the scientific community.
What is the difference between the Lithosphere and the Asthenosphere? The difference between the Lithosphere and the Asthenosphere is, while the Asthenosphere is soft in consistency, the lithosphere is hard and rigid. Also, the Asthenosphere is thicker than the lithosphere.
________ is when one plate dives under another. Subduction
Is basalt a part of the continental or oceanic crust? The oceanic crust.
The process when magma in the ocean is recycled into new ocean crust is called ___________________ Seafloor spreading
Is granite a part of the continental crust or oceanic crust? The continental crust.
What was glossopteris? What did it do for the theory of continental drift? Glossopteris was a prehistoric fern. The discovery of it on continents overseas further proved the theory of continental drift.
How do convection currents in the mantle and outer core work? As the mantle heats up, the material on the bottom gets heated up first. Eventually, this gets warmer and rises up, and the cool material on the bottom gets heated. This process repeats, creating a "loop."
What is a deep-sea trench? A deep-sea trench is a trench that is made when crust from a plate sinks down towards Earth's mantle.
What is a mid-ocean ridge? A mid-ocean ridge is a mountain, of sorts, that is created when two plates move apart.
True or false: The word Pangaea means "all lands." True
True or false: The outer core of the Earth is solid, while the inner core is molten. False
True or false: Many volcanoes and earthquake epicenters appear on or around plate boundaries. True
True or false: The theory of plate tectonics was accepted into the scientific community, but continental drift was not. True
Name three pieces of evidence Wegener had to support his theory. 1) Glossopteris fossils on two continents that are not connected. 2) Similar rock formations on two separate continents. 3) Similar glacial deposits on many separate continents.
