Natural Fibres

QuestionAnswer
Name four natural fibres. Cotton, linen, wool, silk.
What is a fibre? A fibre is a thin hair-like structure that is either short or long
What is the difference between a staple fibre and a filament fibre? Staple fibres are short fibres, when they are spun into yarn it has a slightly hairy appearance. Filament fibres are very long continuous fibres.
What sort of fibres are silk fibres? These are filament fibres. They are very long and give silk a shiny appearance.
How are yarns made? Yarns are made by twisting fibres together. This is called 'spinning'.
Give three reasons why natural fibres are more environmentally friendly. 1. Biodegradable 2. Can be recycled 3. From renewable sources.
What are the steps between harvesting a fibre and making a fabric? Harvesting > cleaning > straightening of fibres > fibres spun into yarn > yarn woven into fabric
Name some general properties of natural fibres. Biodegradable, absorbent, strong, recyclable, poor resistant to biological damage e.g. moths, mould.
Name at least five properties of cotton (think jeans). Strong, absorbent, comfortable to wear, hardwearing, creases easily, durable, inexpensive, shrinks, flammable.
Name four cotton fabrics. Cotton denim, cotton corduroy, cotton drill, cotton poplin, cotton canvas.
Name at least five properties of linen. Hardwearing, very comfortable, strong, highly absorbent, no drape, creases badly.
Name two uses of linen. Lightweight summer clothing. Tea towels, soft furnishings.
Name two other natural fibres that are considered environmentally friendly. Hemp, bamboo.
Name four properties of wool. Warm, absorbent, low flammability, comfortable, non crease, shrinks, takes a long time to dry, some people find it itchy.
Name some textile items that might be made out of silk. Wedding dress, evening gown, luxury clothing, soft furnishings.
Name some properties of silk. Soft, absorbent, comfortable, sheen, drapes well, expensive.
