gravity | the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth, or toward any other physical body having mass. For most purposes Newton's laws of gravity apply, with minor modifications to take the general theory of relativity into account. |

aphelion | the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is furthest from the sun. |
perihelion | the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is closest to the sun. |
centripetal force | a force that acts on a body moving in a circular path and is directed toward the center around which the body is moving. |
solar nebula | solar nebula, gaseous cloud from which, in the so-called nebular hypothesis of the origin of the solar system, the Sun and planets formed by condensation. |
planetesimal | a minute planet; a body that could or did come together with many others under gravitation to form a planet. |
