What did Dill dare Jem to do, and why? Dared Jem to touch the Radley house, because he said that Jem was a scaredy cat
What was Scout's first "crime" at school? Her first "crime" was knowing how to read and write.
What was Calpurnia's fault? That Scout could read and write because she made Scout copy down the Bible
Why did Scout rub Walter Cunningham's nose in the dirt? She was angry at him for getting her in trouble with Miss Caroline Fisher, because she tried to explain that the Cunninghams were too poor to pay for lunch.
Scout said, "He ain't company, Cal, he's just a Cunningham." What did she mean by that, and what was Cal's reply? She didn't consider Walter as real company. Cal's response was to say that anybody who came to Scout's house was company, no matter where they came from. She was also very angry.
What two mistakes did Miss Caroline makes on the first day of school? Tried to give Walter Cunningham money to pay back later, that he couldn't pay back because he was too poor, and then tried to tell Burris Ewell what to do, not knowing that the Ewells were trash.
Why did the Ewells not have to go to school? Because no one could make them, and the truant lady figured that she had done her job just by making them go to the first day of school.
Describe the Radley Place It's located on a bend in the road. The house is dark and gloomy with no screen door. The yard is in the back with a porch in the front and back.
Who is Stephanie Crawford? Town Gossip
Who is Arthur Radley? A recluse who lives near to the Finches. Subject of various rumors that he is a ghost, or a murderer. All of the kids in Maycomb are afraid of this character. Just very shy and this character does not wish to interact with the townspeople.
Who is Caroline Fisher? Scout's first grade teacher
Who is Walter Cunningham? Classmate of Scout. He cannot afford lunch one day at school and accidentally gets Scout in trouble, no shoes, hookworms, clean shirt, neatly mended overalls, skinny jaw, blue eyes
Who is Burris Ewell? Filthy, cusses out the teacher, only goes to the first day of school every year
Who is Mrs. Dubose? Old lady that lived a couple houses down, and she enjoyed harassing Jem and Scout as they passed her every day on their way to school
How did Jem get even with Scout for contradicting him about "Hot Steams"? Rolled her in a tire into the Radley's front porch
Who is Miss Maudie? She was a lady on their street that liked gardening, and tried to be a kind of mother for jem and Scout. She shared a lot of Atticus's views and opinions.
What does Miss Maudie think of the Radleys? Thinks that Boo Radley doesn't want to get out of his house, and that the Radleys are foot-washing Baptists
Why do Dill and Jem want to give Boo Radley a note? They want to ask him what he does i his house all day, and they want to make him feel better about staying indoors for so many years.
What does Atticus say when he founds out about their plan? Told them to stop tormenting Boo Radley, that what they were doing was infringing on his privacy, and not to get near the Radley house ever again.
What happened to Scout and Jem's mother? She died of a sudden heart attack
How old is Jem? Between 9 & 10
How old is Scount? Between 5 & 6
What year does the story take place? 1930's
What is Atticus's occupation? Lawyer
Describe Calpurnia An African- American woman who cooks for the Finch's
What is Dill's claim to fame? Called pocket Merlin because he could act and he was so small
Why is Arthur Radley in trouble with the law? Because him and his "gang" locked a security guard in a court guard outhouse.
How did Arthur escape going to the industrial school? Mr. Radley swore to the judge that this would never happen again and his word was honorable
Why did Mrs. Radley run into the street screaming that Arthur was killing them all? Because he stabbed Mr. Radley in the leg with a scissor because he has been locked in the house for 15 years
Where was Arthur locked up? In the basement of the county court house and then released back in to Mr. Radley's custody.
Why doesn't Arthur come out of the house after his father's dies? Because his older brother Nathan takes his father's place and keeps Boo locked up
Why does the Radley place fascinate Scout, Jem and Dill? Because they want to know what Boo looks like because he hasn't left the house in 15 years
Why is Scout looking forward to starting school? To make friends
Why does Jem not want anything to do with Scout at school? He says reenacting plays is lame
What do you think about the way Atticus treats Walter? Treats him like everyone else and talks about crops and farming.
How does Burris respond to being sent home? He refuses to leave
What does Scout think about her education? Thinks that she won't be able to read and write agin until she is in the 3rd grade
Why doesn't Scout want to go to school after her first day? Because Ms. Caroline told her not to read and write and then the fact that she got in trouble 3 times on the first day.
What Atticus suggest is the way to get along with people? To not judge someone unless you put yourself in their shoes
What might be the cause of the laughter from inside the house? Probably Boo laughing at the antics of the kids outside his door
What does Scout feel about Boo? Believes that he already dead
Why do they think Dill tells lies? Because he wants to be cool
