TermDefinition
Weather The condition of earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place.
Atmosphere The layer of gases that surrounds the planet.
water vapor Water in the form of a GAS...NOT steam, which is tiny droplets of LIQUID water.
density The amount of mass in a given volume (D=M/V). In weather, this refers to the amount of mass in a given volume of AIR; the denser the air, the greater the air pressure
altitude or elevation, is the distance above sea level.
air pressure The result of the weight of a column of air pressing down on an area. Air pressure decreases as altitude increases (inverse relationship...one goes up and the other goes down)
wind The horizontal movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. All winds are caused by differences in air pressure.
ozone A form of oxygen that has three oxygen atoms in each molecule instead of three. Ozone layer, located in the stratosphere protects us from ultraviolet radiation.
Properties of air mass, density, volume, pressure
elevation or altitude, is the distance above sea level.
omnidirectional From every direction at once, as in air pressure is omnidirectional.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.
