PSSA VOCABULARY-20 WORDS

allude mention without discussing at length
analyze discover or reveal something through detailed examination
antonym a word that is the opposite of another word ex. couch/sofa
synonym a word that has a similar meaning to another word ex. cold/frigid
author's purpose the reason the author wrote a passage ex. to entertain, to inform, to describe, to persuade
bias a judgment based on a personal point of view; not presenting both sides of an issue fairly
cause and effect cause statements stem from actions and events, and effects are what happen as a result of the action or event
characterization the method an author uses to reveal characters and their various personalities
define to state or set forth the meaning of a word, phrase, etc.
evaluate form an idea of the amount, number, or value
figurative language language that cannot be taken literally since it is written to create a special effect or feeling
foreshadowingq a device used in literature to create expectation or to set up an explanation of later developments
imagery a word or group of words which appeal to one or more of the senses; sight, taste, touch, hearing, smell
infer deduce or conclude information from evidence and reasoning rather than from explicit statements
metaphor a figure of speech that expresses a comparison between two unlike things, and does not use "like" or "as"
narrative a story; a report of related events presented to reader/listener in words arranged in a logical sequence
paraphrase express the meaning of the writer or speaker or something written or spoken using different words, especially to achiever greater clarity
point of view the angle from which the story is told; dependent upon who is telling the story
simile a comparison of two unlike things in which a word of comparison "like" or "as" is used.
symbolism a device in literature where an object represents an idea
