Topic 7: Weather E

Pages (144 - 154); Air Masses & Fronts

QuestionAnswer
Define an Air Mass: A large body of air with similar characteristics throughout; such as temperature, humidity, and air pressure.
Explain the term, Source Regions. A location over which an air mass is formed, or born.
Describe a Continental Polar air mass. Dry (formed over land), and Cold (polar).
Describe a Maritime Tropical air mass. Moist (formed over the ocean), and Warm (equatorial).
Define Cyclones: Low pressure, lousy weather air masses.
Explain how winds blow regarding a low pressure air mass. Counter-clockwise & in.
Explain how winds blow regarding a high pressure air mass. Clockwise & out.
Define a front: An interface or boundary between two or more air masses. Here, energy is exchanged and change occurs such as precipitation, etc.
Depict the atmospheric conditions associated with a cold front. Violent, short term precipitation, strong winds, and atmospheric conditions with possible thunder and lightening.
Depict the atmospheric conditions associated with a warm front. Gentle, longer term atmospheric conditions entailing soft winds, gentle rain, no thunder and lightening.
Describe an occluded front. Warmer, moister air is pinched between two cooler, dryer air masses. The warmer, moister air is uplifted and often creates a location with precipitation.
Name the prevailing winds effecting the United States, and how air masses generally move across our nation. Southwesterly winds; pushing air masses generally from the West towards the East, and slightly towards the North.
***Can you draw a simple representation of a Mid Latitude Cyclone? Please include the cold front, the warm front, and the occluded front.
Where and when do Hurricanes and Tornados occur? Hurricanes over the ocean, and in the fall. Tornados over land and in the spring in "Tornado Alley".
Name the most dangerous aspects of a hurricane, and a tornado. Hurricane - a storm surge. Tornado - flying debris.
Can you interpret and create a Station Model? See page 13, bottom of ESRT.
Please write out the full Millibar reading of the following abbreviations. 997,021,135, & 899. 999.7 mb, 1002.1 mb, 1013.5 mb, and 989.9 mb.
How does air pressure change as air temperature changes? Inverse relationship.
As air temperature gets closer to dew point, what happens to the probability of precipitation? The chances increase as Relative Humidity approaches 100%.
What single factor determine wind speed? Pressure gradient.
Rapidly falling air pressure suggests what kind of near term weather? Approaching storm with high chances of precipitation. "Low Pressure - Lousy"
What technology has vastly improved our ability to predict and understand weather? Satellites, and radar related applications which can be modeled using computers.
