Net+ Eth. & Tok Ring

Network+ 2005 5-22: Ethernet and Token Ring Devices

QuestionAnswer
Ethernet Hub A device that takes transmits the signals from each device to every other on a star topology -Operates at the physical layer
Passive Hub A hub that just takes the signal on one cable and sends it down the others -also called a concentrator -most have power sources -some have A BNC connector for a connection to a 10Base2 line or an AUI port to connect a transceiver
Active Hub A hub that retransmits weak/damaged signals with proper voltage and current -this resets cable length limitations for the network -Some active hubs can resynchronize data that has been received out of std. time limits, and may alert the admin of this
Switching Hub A hub that records the MAC of each NIC at power on, then looks at the destination of each packet received and retransmits the packet only to the recipient -Has a memory buffer to hold packets as needed, which allows NICs of different speeds to be attache
Intelligent Hub A term that can refer to any of a number of advanced management features such as a management webpage, traffic statistic and network event reporting, support for SNMP, routing/bridging functions, etc.
Token Ring Installation Facts -Max nodes/MSAU -Max MSAUs/Ring -Max Nodes/Port Cable (w/ Local Ring Hub) -Max Nodes/Ring 8 12 4 64-72
Token Ring Max Distances Node-MSAU MSAU-MSAU MSAU-Repeater Max Network Length MSAU-Fiber Optic Repeater 45 m 120 m 600 m 750 m (Type 1 cabling) 1.5 km (max. net. 4 km)
MSAU (MAU) Multistation Access Unit The 'hub' of a Token Ring network -it makes the network act as a ring
Multiple MSAU Chaining The Ring Out of each is plugged into the Ring In of the next A total of two rings are completed, one for transmission and one for backup. When a failure occurs, the MSAUs on either side detect it and use the backup ring
Patch Panel A panel that has one network connector for each wall jack in a facility -Patch cables are then used to make connections to hubs or MSAUs -Must calculate patch cables into max. lengths
Transceiver A device that links two media types without changing the channel access method -Has an AUI port on one side and a 10Base2, 10Base5, RJ-45, or fiber optic connector -called a Media Filter in a Token Ring context

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
