Term | Definition |

Adjacency pairs | where two speakers comments match up to make a corresponding pair in their speech |
agenda-setting | a speaker within the conversation sets the topic for what is to be discussed |
back-channelling behaviour | the person listening to the conversation gives the speaker feedback often encourages them to continue |
false start | this is when the speaker starts to talk then stops and restarts the comment - usually rephrasing what they were going to say |
fillers | the speaker pauses but voices their pause with err or umm |
hedges | where whole words are used as extras, not part of conversation e.g. like, you know |
interruption | 2nd speaker starts to speak before the 1st has finished 2nd seizes the floor |
